What was found in the firmware

The Jinwei Zhao, PhD candidate at the University of Victoria in Canada, identified three new power states in a firmware version of May 2026: PowerSource_USBC, PowerSource_BATTERY and PowerSource_USBC_AND_BATTERYNext to them, a struct named DishBatteryStats, designed to return state of charge and charging status.

The detail that matters here is not the struct name, but what the antenna can “see” about itself. A Mini plugged into a random external power bank can’t currently report an exact battery percentage within the Starlink app — it just knows it’s powered. The DishBatteryStats requires an integrated cell that the device itself manages, as also noted report referring to an original report by PCMag.

The hardware details that have leaked so far give a fairly specific picture: internal name mini2_prod1, 4S lithium battery with BQ40Z series Battery Management System — the same class of chip used when state-of-charge accuracy matters, according to technical analysis hardware teardownCharging is done via a USB-C PD port with an input range of 11–24V and a minimum requirement of 100W (20V/5A) — that is, the same or slightly higher threshold than the current Mini, not looser.

In terms of dimensions, the panel is marginally smaller at 225×273mm from 236×276mm of the original Mini, while the EIRP (transmitted power) drops slightly to 27.4dBW from 27.57dBW. In practice, this difference is not something you will feel in normal conditions; it simply shows that SpaceX "stole" a little space and power to accommodate the battery without swelling the dish.

Alongside the Mini 2, a second codename was also spotted, MINI1_RUGGED_PROD1. Who is it really life-changing for?

The built-in battery isn't the same for all Starlink Mini users. If you're camping in a controlled area with your car nearby, the current power bank system already solves the problem. The change makes sense mainly in three scenarios:

  • Van life and off-grid travel: One less cable, one less point of failure. You no longer need to carry a separate 100W PD certified power bank just for the antenna.
  • Work/research fields without a stable supply: Geologists, photojournalists, teams that set up a temporary connection point and tear it down in 20 minutes. The built-in battery means "pick up and go" without a cable checklist.
  • Emergency situations: earthquake, flood, power outage in a wide area. Here, autonomy matters more than speed, because the problem is not bandwidth but whether the antenna will turn on at all.

But if you're using the Mini primarily at home as an alternative to fiber — something that's very common in areas where Starlink is compared to fiber — the battery is just a nice extra that you'll never use, and it's definitely not worth waiting for a hardware upgrade just for it.

Here's the missing piece from most of the reports surrounding this leak: an embedded lithium battery inside a device that travels in a carry-on bag isn't just a technical detail — it's a regulatory issue. Airlines have a specific limit of 100Wh for lithium batteries in carry-on luggage without approval, and up to 160Wh with airline approval (up to two additional units). Unofficial estimates suggest a battery of around 99Wh — just under the former limit, which reports suggest was a deliberate design choice to allow the device to pass as regular undocumented baggage.

But there's a discrepancy in the range estimates that's worth knowing before you get your hopes up: some sources are talking about up to 5 hours of continuous operation, while PCMag reviewer Brian Westover realistically estimates 1-2 hours, with the reasoning that SpaceX will keep the battery small to keep the dish from weighing down. The difference is big — 1 hour and 5 hours don't solve the same problem — and until there's an official specification, it's best not to base any travel plans on it.

A second point that is not mentioned anywhere: if the battery is non-removable (something very likely in a device with an IP rating for outdoor use), then a "worn out" dish in 2-3 years means replacing the entire antenna, not just the battery — something that the current model with an external power bank doesn't even pose as a risk.

Here at TechNoid, we think the built-in battery is the right, expected next step for the Mini — but not a reason to delay a purchase today. If you need satellite now, today's Mini with a properly selected power bank does just the trick, at the cost of just one more cable in your bag. What bothers us a little about how other sites are presenting the issue is the overconfidence around the 5-hour autonomy — the firmware strings themselves say nothing about battery capacity, only that the software infrastructure is there. Until SpaceX officially releases a spec sheet, we'd keep our expectations close to the more conservative estimate, not the more optimistic.
