1. The truth behind the 300 Mbps numbers
If you believe the marketing decks, low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite internet will make you forget about fiber optics. We at TechNoid measured 24-hour sustained throughput in three different locations in mainland Greece and the data tells a different story.
The maximum speed occurs in the late hours of the night, when the constellation passes ideally over the local ground station. However, once darkness falls and the neighbors start to streaming, the contention ratio causes bandwidth to dip to 80-120 Mbps. The problem is not the capacity of the satellite, but the capacity of the terrestrial base stations (gateways) that are connected to the internet backbone.
2. Signal physics: Why the obstruction map is fooling you
The Starlink app tells you that your roof is "clear." Don't believe it. The algorithm is designed to give the green light at the slightest opening in the sky, ignoring micro-obstacles.
A pine branch 15 meters away may not completely cut off the connection, but it causes micro-drops lasting 200-500 milliseconds. In practice, this translates into disconnections from Zoom calls and stuck banking transactions. If the antenna does not have an absolute horizon of 100 degrees, you will pay a penny a month to watch "Searching for Signals" every time there is a north wind.
3. The hardware you should have bought yesterday
The basic package comes with a router that has neither an out-of-the-box Ethernet port nor any serious bridging capabilities. We tested the setup without any temperament and we tell you what you really need:
- Ethernet Adapter: Essential, unless you want to rely on problematic Wi-Fi 5 for your work.
- Third-party Router: Put the Starlink in Bypass Mode and hook up a Wi-Fi 6 mesh system (like the Asus ZenWiFi or TP-Link Deco) to it. The factory router's NAT "clogs" as soon as you open more than 500 simultaneous connections (e.g. for torrents or heavy web browsing).
- Surge Protector: Satellite dishes act as static electricity magnets during summer storms. Don't neglect lightning protection for your power lines.
4. Gaming and VoIP: How to avoid packet loss
Can you play Competitive shooters? The answer is "yes, but with conditions". Latency plays consistently at around 35ms to 45ms, an excellent value for satellite. The thorn is called bufferbloat.
When someone else in the house starts downloading a 50GB update, the router's buffer fills up and your ping skyrockets to 300ms. The solution we implemented at TechNoid is to enable SQM (Smart Queue Management) or FQ-CoDel on the router we added in addition. With this "trick", upload/download prioritization prioritizes your game packets and lag spikes disappear.
5. TechNoid's Verdict: Is 2024 Worth It?
If you have access to FTTH (fiber optic), don't even consider it. Satellite internet remains expensive, is affected by weather conditions, and has upload limitations (usually below 25 Mbps).
However, if you are in an isolated area, village, or industrial zone without copper or fiber networks, it is a one-way street that changes the data of your daily life. Just calculate in your budget the extra 100-150€ for the right networking hardware that is not included in the manufacturer's box.
