Flipper Devices has responded to community concerns about the perception that it had slowed down the development of the Flipper Zero firmware, a device that has gained precarious popularity due to its hacking and security functionality.
The company announced that it will focus on strengthening firmware maintenance and will review the process for working with contributors and users who suggest new features. This decision comes in response to community pressure for transparency and communication.
Flipper Zero, which launched on Kickstarter in 2020, has raised over $5 million amid questions about its reliability. The COVID-19 pandemic has created production and supply chain challenges, but they remain true to their promises to backers.
Despite the challenges, Flipper Devices confirmed that they delivered on all their promises, delivering supported features and creating a platform that includes APIs and SDKs. The need for real support was primarily driven by a technical limitation: the Flipper Zero’s flash memory is limited to 700 KB, forcing the team to find clever ways to manage the ability to add new features.
The new firmware architecture 1.0, released in 2024, is based on dynamically loading applications from microSD cards, resulting in the decoupling of core functions from the base firmware and the development of modular applications.

Addressing community concerns, Flipper Devices introduced four key changes to its development process:
- Asynchronous communication: All development requests will now be managed through discussions on GitHub, limiting the use of real conversations.
- Weighted feature requests: Users will be able to vote on suggested features, ensuring that the team reviews the most popular suggestions weekly.
- Stricter request control: A revamped contribution guide will introduce strict requirements for PRs, especially for code derived from AI.
- Mandatory integration test: Testing will be made mandatory for all code changes, encouraging community participation in the QA process.
Flipper Devices acknowledged that managing the project was difficult due to the overwhelming number of users making requests. With over a million users, the company said it was necessary to separate real needs from personal preferences.
The voting system in GitHub Discussions aims to make it easier to identify the most important requests.
Additionally, the submission process for third-party applications will remain stable, maintaining the existing support mechanism.
